Indian startup blogging websites backlink performance in 2012

Hello everyone! Welcome to my site and my 1st blog post. I have decided to analyze how blogging websites in India performed in terms of backlinks in the year 2012 and my inputs on driving more genuine authoritative performance.

Before I begin here’s a small disclaimer: “I have no affiliation with any blogging websites, data presented in this post is publicly available through premium on-page analysis tools in the market and this data may contain errors and should not be used as a source of reference for any official work although every in-depth detail has been reviewed for an accurate analysis. Please use this data at your own risk”.

This blog post has been created purely from an SEO and Data Visualization perspective on a lazy evening and nothing else should be assumed.

Visualizing Data helps everyone from the C-Suite to the frontline managers and startups to get a clear picture of their performance and what steps can be taken to boost or amplify their strategies to see their metrics skyrocket.

The reason I chose to analyse the blogging websites from a backlink perspective is simple -

a) Backlinks help you analyse how each blog post performed over a period of time.

b) Understand which disruptive blog post drove in traffic to strategize content towards a successful blogging strategy.

c) For-Profit Blogging Websites can assign a ‘value’ for each blog post to realize ROI per post.

d) Finally, it helps understand on how well the blogging website is writing content that empowers users to share posts over social media which inturn drives backlinks.

e) Blogs that are having a challenge in building a userbase can leverage on backlink data to identify where the challenges are as to improve UI, Social Sharing, Responsive templates, Mobile-only website and more.

For this post I decided to analyze – StartupDunia, Dazeinfo, Dare, Yourstory, Buzzom and Nextbigwhat

I came about rounding off these websites solely for showing up in google search when I keyed in key search terms so congratulations for the above websites on search performance :)

It is only fair to mention Startcup was a strong contender, however, since they are a new website, not much of backlink data was available. I would recommend checking them out for their insightful and engaging writeups.

In the below chart you will see a sweet chart detailing backlink performance for each website (click on image for a larger size).

Upon reviewing Yourstory ‘rocky’ chart I searched the archives during that period of ‘high rises’ and see this was due to the ‘techsparks’ physical event that was driving an awesome amount of traffic and not to mention – ‘domain authority’ to the website which we will discuss further on.

Another sweet graph to see backlink performance in an alternative graph -

Indian Tech Blogging Backlink PerformanceThe kind of insights that we can drive from these visualizations is -

a) Blogging Websites can take the cue from Yourstory and proactively begin engaging their audience not only through the regular blog posts but also exercise ‘vlogging’ a channel of engaging and discovering a newer audience base.

b) Extend blogging practice from regular blog publishing to publishing infographics, hosting webinars with industry leaders, hosting online offers ex – “free wordpress theme worth $50 if you can discover a glitch in our code!” or the likes.

c) With enough resources host a physical event like SearchCon or SocialCon etc.

d) Leverage on tools like – Hootsuite(disclaimer – “we’re a Hootsuite Enterprise Partner”), Buffer, Viralheat and a whole lot more tools to proactively share on multiple social media platforms.

e) Identify influential authors and invite them to guest blog. (I use Klout).

f) A website like DARE is perfectly ‘consistent’ to have the stats like above considering it’s physical level distribution reach.

g) At the end of the day it all boils down to core optimization of ‘owned media’ assets so consider your website frontend – is it responsive? how long does it take to load in different geographies, where exactly are my visitors exiting and is my content written in an engaging and compelling way?

Leverage on tools like – Kissmetrics, Clicktale, Crazyegg and the likes to a get a clear picture on your current strategy and work on amplifying your positive attributes.

By now you must be wondering where is the stats on Nextbigwhat well here it is -

I couldn’t integrate Nextbigwhat backlink data in the above charts due to its sheer large number of backlinks it made other websites stats look minute!

Take a look -

Nextbigwhat Backlink Performance

The last bit of the graph blows your mind out doesn’t it? :) I think you all know where this amazingly high backlink data was generated. Thanks to – Unpluggd this awesome event not only delivered value to its userbase physically but it also drove an amazing high backlink surge to the website driving domain authority, increased user reading base etc.

To end this post – I would like to conclude by saying all the blogs listed above share some amazing insights on technology, startups, social media and keeping up collectively with these blogs most certainly adds value to your thought leadership in any particular niche you might be involved in.

Thanks for going through this post and please feel free to share your comments, feedback, suggestions in the comment section below.

Tejas, I am following startup scene in Bangalore since 5 years. Sure, they rank, but you would be surprised that there are other players around. No offense, but this is a bad list.

StartupDunia — I don’t even visit their website anymore. Boring!

Dazeinfo — Filled with grammatical mistakes. So much of nonsense opinion.

Dare — These folks are clearly struggling to come up with interesting news.

Yourstory — I like YourStory. There events, however, suck!

Buzzom — Haven’t the guys behind this company shifted to other ventures?

Nextbigwhat — Sigh! They think they know it all, which they don’t.

Again, nothing against you. Just thought there were other players worth focusing.

Interesting thoughts. As mentioned in my post. I drew up this list from a pure SEO perspective(rankings).

Thank you for sharing your opinions. Since I see my list is pre-dominantly on startups I have re-named my post and plan to write a similar post covering pure tech reviews.

Feel free to share your suggestions and thoughts. Have a great weekend.
