- What is this story about?
- A boy born with a disease that killed him once before he was 5, and who got 19 days of school a year, taught himself to build the web from the bedroom it kept him in, and used that to escape the country where his medicine was unaffordable. It is a first hand testimony and autobiography, told by Tejas Kumar himself, covering severe hemophilia A, an emergency room at 4, faith, and the move from Qatar to Berlin.
- What is severe hemophilia A?
- A genetic disorder in which the blood is missing factor VIII, the protein that holds a clot together. Severe means <1% of normal activity, which is the threshold at which bleeding starts on its own, without an injury, into joints and muscles. Tejas Kumar has had it since birth.
- How much does the medicine cost?
- India's drug price regulator caps factor VIII at ₹23.22 per international unit. Keeping one adult on the standard preventive schedule takes about 273,000 IU a year, or roughly ₹6.3 million, about $66,000. That is around 34× what the average person in India earns in a year.
- Why did he move to Berlin?
- Qatar does not let foreign families stay once the head of the household turns 60, and his father was 58. Returning to India meant medicine he could not afford, so he applied for engineering jobs in every country with a healthcare system that would cover him and took the first offer, from a Berlin startup, in 2015. He has lived there since.
- Does Tejas Kumar speak about this on stage?
- Yes. He tells this story as an inspirational keynote, in a full length version and a 20 minute one, and it is not a technical talk and does not need a technical audience. He first told it publicly in a TEDx talk, Papercuts Can Kill, at TEDxYouth@Doha in 2013, and has been speaking at conferences since 2018. Speaking enquiries go to clair@tejas.qa.
- Does Tejas Kumar preach at churches and Christian conferences?
- He is available to, and it is the invitation he most wants. He became a Christian at 15 and has served in his church as a youth leader, a worship leader, a men's ministry leader, a deacon and in care ministry. In a church he preaches from the Bible rather than giving a talk about himself, using what he has lived through, including the healing at 19 that he cannot account for, to illustrate the text. Churches, church conferences, camps and youth events are welcome to ask. Enquiries go to clair@tejas.qa.
- Is this a book?
- Not yet. The full account is on this page, told in 39 chapters across 11 parts, and it is the draft of the material rather than a summary of it. No publisher holds it and no agent represents it. Tejas Kumar is the author of Fluent React (O'Reilly), which is a technical book and not this one. Publishing enquiries go to clair@tejas.qa.
- Are the rights to this story available?
- Yes. It is his own life, so the life rights are his to grant, and they have never been optioned or sold. Nothing is second hand either: the doctors, the clerk and the friends are alive and findable. Enquiries about a book, television or film adaptation go to clair@tejas.qa.
